TOP 5 Life Lessons from Finding Dory

Yet another masterpiece by the Andrew-Angus duo, the movie sequel to 2003 blockbuster ‘Finding Nemo’, Finding Dory is finally here and it’s breaking the box office records globally as it takes its fans on an emotional rollercoaster ride, never letting go of its usual comic nature all throughout its stretch of 105 mins. One cannot possibly leave the theaters without feeling satisfied by this one.

The Top 5  Life Lessons  this movie teaches us in its own comical yet profound way, are listed below:

    5. Let Go. Especially of the Past.

Marlin (Nemo’s father) has always been depicted as a scared, over analyzing, worry wart in the movie series. He has been caught up in the past since he lost his wife and son and had to go through hardships due to Dory’s short-term memory loss. In this movie, he finds it hard to leave her alone or to trust her forgetting that she had made it alone all through her life despite her problem. He realized it pretty late that his nature and fears were simply holding him and his loved ones, back and slowly began to ‘let go’.

4. Step 1: Know your goals. Step 2:  Believe you will get there and Step 3:  JUST START MOVING TOWARDS THEM.

Dory is known for being one of the most carefree and optimistic, of all Pixar characters we love. Marlin, on the other hand, was the exact opposite of Dory. He analyzed and assumed more than the situations required.  In the movie, he started seeing possibilities the moment he started asking himself, ” What would Dory do? ” in every situation he encountered. “She wouldn’t think.” he said, “She’d simply go with the first opportunity that came her way.” Once you have a goal set in your mind, all you gotta do is keep an optimistic mindset and keep grabbing opportunities that come along your way to help you get closer to your goals.

3. Septopus : “What is it with you and ruining my plans? Listen to me! I have one goal in life. ONE. And it is to get to Cleveland.”

Dory: “No. YOU LISTEN TO ME. What is so great about ‘Plans’? I NEVER had a plan. Did I plan to lose my parents? Did I plan to meet Marlin and Nemo? Did you and I plan to meet? NO! And that’s because ‘The best things in life happen by chance.’ because THAT’S LIFE and that’s you being with me, out in the Ocean. Not safe in some stupid glass box.”

Couldn’t agree more. The best thing about life is that it is absolutely unpredictable. Don’t be in the ‘stupid glass box’ of your Comfort Zone. Be ‘Out in the Ocean’. Life’s an adventure. Our job is not to control it but to Experience It!

2. Dory’s parents to little Dory: “You can do anything you put your mind to, Cupcake!”

Dory always fought for what she believed in and she always got where she wanted to. Neither the size nor the might of whatever stood in her way, made her give up. She strongly believed and hence, she achieved.  Similarly, if we put our minds to our goals and follow her inspirational and positive attitude, I bet we will soon be basking in the glory of the results we achieve.

1. “JUST KEEP SWIMMING!” – Dory

One of Dory’s most famous quotes ever. Also, one of the simplest yet most meaningful sayings I have ever come across in my life. We cannot possibly expect to get through life without ever getting hurt or facing challenges and loss. That’d be some dreaming if we believe so. However, it doesn’t stop there, does it? You’ve got a whole life ahead of you and you never know just what kinda surprises are in store for you. Expect the best and be prepared for the worst. All you can really do is trust your life and ‘Just keep Swimming’ through it.

All the best! I hope you live a GREAT life! Awesome surprises lie ahead of you. Amen!

Summary cum Review : Dory – voiced by Ellen DeGeneres- is a wide-eyed, blue tang fish who suffers from memory loss every 10 seconds or so. In this movie, she suddenly starts to remember bits and pieces of her past, especially her childhood memories of her parents Charlie and Jenny. She remembers that she was somehow separated from her parents as a child. With the help of her friends Nemo and Marlin, Dory embarks on an epic adventure to find them. However, she is soon separated from them and Marlin now sets on another adventure, Finding Dory, with his son, this time. Dory’s journey brings her to the Marine Life Institute, a conservatory that houses diverse ocean species. Here she meets a 7 legged Octopus that she comically names Septopus since he lost one of his tentacles. Initially, their relationship was purely based on mutual interest, however, as it usually happens when someone gets to know Dory better, he grew fonder of her and the relationship developed into a heartwarming friendship that was beautiful for the audience to experience. The movie tells a lot about Dory’s true nature and capabilities and  teaches several Life Lessons along the way. Dory’s personal adventure becomes an adventure for its viewers somewhere down the lane. The extraordinary and highly unpredictable scenes (especially the ending) makes it worth everyone’s while.
